The title of this volume is inspired by the title of a 1986 book by Philip Bayard Crosby entitled Quality is free. His thesis is that, in the long run, the costs of non-quality are greater than the costs of quality. Similarly, paraphrasing Crosby, the authors argue that "sustainability is free." The book - the result of research based on eight business cases from the marine industry involving shipyards, design firms, marinas and component retailers - investigates the possibility of changing business models from traditional to sustainable, transforming sustainability from a source of cost to a source of value. The key directions that emerge in revisiting business models are stakeholder engagement, servitization, and the use of technology to reduce environmental impacts.
